"Draw/Paint: Depth and Dimension"

April 12 - May 17    2 -5 PM    Thursdays    6 weeks

For ALL levels (including first-time beginners and those with experience). Learn and enjoy at your own pace, with individual attention, at the Athenaeum School of the Arts, La Jolla Art Studio, 1008 Wall Street.

In this class you will create art through a series of structured, fun and unique lessons for a greater understanding of depth and dimension. You will learn how to make objects look 3-dimensional, how to create scenes with greater spatial depth, plus how to “push-the-envelope” to enhance the realistic quality of any piece of art. Including: highlights and shadows (3D basics), perspective and positioning (for well-grounded subjects), value contrast and tonal graduation (to make objects stand out). We will draw and paint various subjects such as: parts of the face, water lilies, clouds, hot air balloons, draped cloth, fountains, archways and more. You will learn essential elements to include in your own work. There will be handouts especially prepared for this class.

You will have an opportunity to bring other art to discuss (or work on) in class to improve on depth. What you learn in this class applies to all types of art: realism, impressionism and abstract art, plus any media. These lessons will give you greater confidence to draw and paint anything that comes your way.

Bring: This class is not limited to a specific media. You may work solely with pencil or add another media of your choice: a basic set of acrylics, watercolors, pastels, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, charcoal, etc. with the appropriate papers or surfaces for that media. Be sure to bring a drawing pad (9x12” or larger) or simply plenty of white paper, plus soft pencils (as 4B, 6B) and eraser.

$190 nonmembers; $170 members; plus $8 materials fee.

$8 materials fee collected on the first day of class.
